The National Sonography Organization™ (NSO) was established to address the challenges that have gone unrecognized, undocumented, and unresolved within the sonography profession for far too long.

We believe meaningful change requires more than conversations. It requires evidence, accountability, and action.

Our mission is to advance the welfare, safety, recognition, and working conditions of sonographers while giving our profession a stronger, unified voice.  

Turning Experience Into Evidence 

For years, sonographers have raised concerns about overwhelming workloads, inadequate exam times, workplace injuries, burnout, inconsistent compensation, and limited professional protections.

Yet the data needed to demonstrate the extent of these problems has been lacking.

We're changing that. 

Through SonoSafe™ and SonoStudent™, the NSO is building a foundation of real-world data to identify systemic problems, challenge outdated practices, advocate for safer working conditions, and push for greater accountability from employers, professional societies, and accrediting organizations.

These platforms provide opportunities for sonographers and students to document their experiences, contribute to professional transparency, and help identify patterns that have historically been difficult to measure.

From Documentation to Action

Collecting data is only the beginning. Our goal is to use that evidence to pursue measurable improvements across the profession.

The NSO is working to:

• Advance workplace safety: Use documented injuries, workloads, and occupational concerns to advocate for stronger ergonomic protections and safer working conditions.
• Establish reasonable exam times: Pursue specialty-specific examination time recommendations that prioritize patient care and sonographer safety.
• Promote wage transparency: Identify compensation trends and disparities to support informed career decisions and fair compensation.
• Improve clinical education: Identify challenges in clinical training, supervision, and hands-on opportunities to support improvements in sonography education.
• Strengthen professional accountability: Engage employers, credentialing organizations, accrediting bodies, and regulatory agencies to challenge outdated practices and promote greater transparency.

Advocacy Beyond Awareness

The NSO is committed to taking documented concerns directly to the organizations and decision-makers positioned to address them.

Our approach includes publishing findings, developing evidence-informed recommendations, submitting formal requests for change, and tracking organizational responses and progress.

We believe professional standards should reflect the realities of those performing the work—not simply the expectations placed upon them.

Our goal isn't simply to document the problems. It's to use the evidence to help change the standards and practices that allow them to continue.
